Let’s talk about s’mores for a bit.
They’re everything that’s good about camping.
They can make the worst day better.
And they bring out the best of the flavors in chocolate.
When we go camping, they’re absolutely essential….. I would sooner leave home without bug spray than I would without the ingredients for s’mores.
{Well really, there are other essentials I won’t leave without. Here are some awesome examples}
This, of course, begs the question: Why change something as good as s’mores?
You may have heard this saying: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”??
To be clear, something as classic as a s’more isn’t broken.
But the chocoholic in me sometimes wants more chocolate and less graham cracker.
Chocoholic much??
All chocolate interventions aside, this recipe is always a hit with the adults, but I do not recommend it for the children, especially the younger ones. It’s delicious, but anything involving a dip is messy, and there is of course the propensity to put more sugar in their systems because it’s not a traditional s’more, so use your discretion.
It’s also super easy to make over a campfire. Personally, I usually prep my cast iron skillet with the ingredients before we leave to save a step at the campsite!
I’ll spare you more explanation and just give you the recipe already!

- Start by breaking the chocolate bars into pieces and layering them into the bottom of the cast iron skillet.
- Over the chocolate bars, place a layer of marshmallows, until the chocolate is completely covered.
- Cover the skillet with aluminum foil and place over the fire but away from direct flames. Depending on the strength of the fire, the chocolate should be melted in 5-7 minutes. Once the marshmallows start to melt, give it another few minutes until they're thoroughly melted, being sure not to leave it on so long or so close to the heat that the chocolate burns.
- It's kind of trial and error learning to cook something like this over a campfire, but with only 10 minutes of gentle heat needed, you should be able to melt everything just fine!
- Serve when thoroughly melted, with plenty of graham cracker sticks for dipping - enjoy!
